Accomplishments for 2010

ASMDA continues to prosper and providing Space Camp scholarships, academic scholarships, and support to several key events.  Below are some of the accomplishments your organizations achieved in 2010:

  • Provided 16 full scholarships (an entire Space Camp Team) for 9-11 year olds to attend the 4–10 July 2010 USS&RC Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.  This year’s winners included children from Huntsville, Colorado Springs, Omaha, Kwajalein Atoll, and Alaska.
  • Awarded six $4,000 academic scholarships from the ASMDA “Loretta Spencer” College and University Scholarship program on 17 August 2010 as part of the Space and Missile Defense Conference. Ms. Loretta Spencer presented the scholarships to the winners:
  • Paul Bisso, Masters in Physics, University of Alabama
  • Amber Kaderbek, Chemical Engineering, University of Alabama
  • Jesus Ortega Mares, Jr., Mechanical Engineering, University of Alabama
  • Christopher Peterson, Aerospace Engineering, Syracuse University
  • Christopher Romanczuk, Chemical/Bio-molecular Engineering, Rice University
  • Robert Woods, Chemistry, Auburn University
  • Awarded four $1,000 academic scholarships from the ASMDA “Loretta Spencer” College and University Scholarship program to the Calhoun Scholarship Foundation to encourage students in the initial two years of college to pursue engineering, science, and math degrees.
  • Awarded $15,100 in Youth Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Grants to include USS&RC Roadshow 2010 ($2,500), Sci-Quest Expanding Your Horizons ($2,500), Junior Achievement Young Minds at Work ($3,000), Girls Inc. Operation Smart ($2,500), JETS TEAMS Competition ($3,100), and Grissom HS Math Competition ($2,000).
  • Presented twelve Space and Missile Defense Technical Achievement and Service Excellence Awards for both Government and contractor employees year in recognition of exceptional achievement in the development, test, and deployment of air, space, and missile defense systems:

  • 2009 Space and Missile Defense Technical Achievement Award – Contractor
  • 2009 Space and Missile Defense Service Excellence Award – Government
  • 2009 Space and Missile Defense Service Excellence Award – Contractor
  • Co-sponsored (with NDIA and UAH) the tenth annual Adventures in Engineering Day, 29 September. Over 300 regional high school juniors interested in math, science, and engineering were provided insights into exciting North Alabama career opportunities.  This day long program included tours, briefings, and hands-on demonstrations at various Redstone Arsenal Agencies.
  • Co-sponsored the annual Space and Missile Defense Conference, VBC, 16-19 August 2010.
  • Supported SMDC/ARSTRAT’s Ball, Army 10 Miler participation, NCO and Soldier of the Year Program, and Annual AUSA Conference.
  • Supported community veteran efforts to include the Madison County Veterans Memorial Foundation, Blue Star Program, Operation Christmas Bear, Still Serving Veterans, Honor Flight (Tennessee Valley Chapter), Veterans Museum, and Veterans Day Parade local band participation (11 November 2010).
